How does Hypnobirthing actually work?

📅 March 13, 2025
So what is the deal with Hypnobirthing? And how does it actually work to help improve women’s birth experiences?

Hypnobirthing has been gaining more and more popularity with birthing mothers in recent years. With celebrities such as Angelina Jolie, Jessica Alba, Fearne Cotton and Giovanna Fletcher all being huge fans. Even the Duchess Kate Middleton used Hypnobirthing for all three of her births and called it “hugely powerful” and she commented that she even enjoyed her labours because of it!

This growing interest in alternative birthing methods that prioritise a more calm and positive experience for both mother and baby, has perhaps come about due to the medicalisation of birth in our western culture. Birth is a natural, physiological event, however most people now see it more as a medical emergency, steeped in fear and intervention from the offset. Learning to embrace the physiology of childbirth with Hypnobirthing can lead to a more natural and empowering experience.

So how does Hypnobirthing actually work?

1. Reducing Fear and Anxiety
Hypnobirthing equips women with relaxation techniques and self-hypnosis tools to manage fear and anxiety associated with childbirth. By practicing deep breathing exercises, visualisation, and positive affirmations, women can enter a state of deep relaxation, allowing their bodies to work harmoniously during labour. This reduction in fear and anxiety can lead to a more comfortable birthing experience due to optimising the birth hormones.

2. Promoting Natural Pain Relief
Hypnobirthing emphasises the power of the mind-body connection, enabling women to tap into their innate ability to manage pain. Through self-hypnosis and relaxation techniques, women can release endorphins, the body’s natural incredible pain-relieving hormones. This can significantly reduce the need for medical interventions or pain medication during labour.

3. Enhancing Bonding and Connection
Hypnobirthing encourages active participation from birth partners – a huge and very important part of my courses!  This involvement can help foster a sense of unity and support during the birthing process. By involving partners in relaxation exercises and affirmations, a deep bond is nurtured, creating a positive and intimate birthing environment, which has a positive affect on how oxytocin (the hormone that makes our contractions) is produced. This shared experience can also strengthen the emotional connection between partners and the newborn baby. Being a birth partner is not a spectator sport!

4. Facilitating a Gentle Birth
Hypnobirthing promotes a more gentle and calm birth experience, allowing women to trust their bodies and embrace the natural process of labour. By focusing on how the environment affects your relaxation, women can create a calming atmosphere that supports the physiological progression of labour. Understanding how the body works, as well as how to support the physiology (with birthing positions, optimising hormones and breath-work) can mean women feel more in tune with what their body is doing. This gentle approach can contribute to a smoother birth and faster recovery post-birth.

5. Empowering Women
Lastly, Hypnobirthing empowers women by providing them with knowledge and tools to make informed decisions about their birthing experience. This is more important than ever, as we are seeing rising induction of labour rates, increased Cesarean birth rates, and increased ‘birth trauma’ in birthing women. Through education of their options and birthing process, women gain confidence in their bodies’ capabilities and become active participants in their own care. This empowerment can have a lasting impact on a woman’s overall well-being and self-esteem and promote a positive birth experience, no matter how she actually gives birth in the end.

As I say to all of my clients, the aim is for a positive birth, not a perfect birth.
